Improved Kienyeji

BACKGROUND

The introduction of Improved Kienyeji Chicken rearing by the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute in the year 2011 and introduction of the Indian Kuroiler in Kenya gave a new face to Poultry Farming in the country. Previously, farmers commonly focused on Layers and broilers farming. The kienyeji farming was only practiced in small scales and was not yet commercialized. However, improved kienyeji rearing has, in the recent past, found some strong interest among farmers who are now practicing it not just for domestic purposes but also for commercial purposes. The practice has even found its way among some urban areas although is yet to be absorbed fully as a part of mainstream sources of income in these areas.

The name KIENYEJI is a local Swahili whose English equivalent is ‘Free range’.

There are different types improved kienyeji breeds that are currently popular in Kenya:

5. Kenbro Chicken

6. Dominant Kienyeji Chicken

There are various methods on how Kienyeji chicken rearing in Kenya is practiced:

1. FREE RANGE:

In free range conditions, the birds are not confined and can look for food over an extended open area. Makeshift shelters may be provided in order to protect the birds from severe whether conditions. The birds may wander around usually in liter collection areas trees and nests in the bush.
The flock contains may contain birds of different breeds and varying ages and it usually hard to control inbreeding.

In this case the stocking density should not exceed 1000 birds in one hectare for its good to note that hundred birds will require 0.4 hectares of land.

Requirements;

1. Large, fenced and well drained land with trees for shade.

2. Land partitioned to allow rotation (runs) to reduce parasite build up.

3. House for shelter and laying nests

ADVANTAGES

  1. Reduced cannibalism and egg eating for there is no overcrowding
  2. Less feeds used as birds scavenge outside
  3. Manure evenly spread to the runs
  4. Requires low capital outlay

DISADVANTAGES

  1. A lot of land is required which may not be available
  2. Area may become contaminated with diseases and parasites
  3. Birds exposed to predators or thieves
  4. Difficulty to have close supervision on individual birds
  5. Possibility of eggs getting lost in the runs
  6. Dirty eggs
  7. Breeding program  not easy to follow

2.BACKYARD EXTENSIVE SYSTEM

Poultry are housed only at night but allowed free range during the day to wander around the fields.
In most cases, they are given a small amount of grain in the morning when moving them out and evening to supplement the food collected in their scavenging.

Commonly found in urban and peri-urban and in rural situations.

In some cases, in the run system, the birds are confined in an enclosed area outside during the day and housed at night.

Feed and water are available in the house to avoid wastage by rain, wind and by wild animals.

3.DEEP LITTER POULTRY FARMING SYSTEM

To be able to start a successful poultry farming in Kenya, there are several factors and considerations that the farmer must put in place. The most crucial factor is usually the structure, assuming that there is already an available piece of land for the structure. In erecting a poultry structure, there are several requirements that should be met in order to ensure high comfort of the birds which of course would result to higher productivity. These requirements include:

-Good source of light

-Shelter from direct sunlight

-Shelter from wind

-Clean environment

-Good and ample space in side the shelter depending of the number of birds you want to keep.

One of the biggest factors to consider while putting up your poultry structure is the capacity or rather the number of birds you are intending to keep. For example, in the case of chicken, to help you calculate the dimension for your cages, a rough estimate should be one chicken bird for every feet squared. For example, if you want to rear 6 birds, then your cage should have the following dimensions:

6ft by 1ft = 6square feet.

This means that your floor surface area should be 6 feet squared. From the above calculation, you can have chicken cages that measures 3 feet by 2 feet and they should hold 6 birds each.

Also you should ensure that the birds are secure from predators. You should therefore have the cages build strongly and make sure that there are no big openings left around the cages. Keep in mind that the birds are originally wild animals and they may escape in case they find a way out.

Sanitation is also very important in your cages. The best way to make sure that the chicken cages are always clean is by using a fine wire mesh as the floor of the cages. This means that the droppings will pass down away from the floor and therefore the birds will have a clean environment all the time.

The design of the laying nest is also a very crucial factor to put into consideration. Birds will lay eggs more comfortably in a dark place that in an exposed area. The floor of the laying boxes should be covered with a soft material or saw dust in order to minimize eggs breakages.
